Gesture recognition to control gadgets
Hand gesture recognition to control your television
It looks like technicians are finally understanding that building technology is only part one and making it easy for people to communicate with it is just as important. Nintendo is on top of the sales charts with it revolutionary Wii motion control and DS touch and sound control, Apple introduced the 'pinching' and 'sweeping' on the iPhone and Microsoft Surface makes a table understand what you put on it and interact with it. We all know the clap-to-turn-of-light-switch and whistle-to-find-keys-chain gadgets but now Australian scientists allow you to control your television and other electronics with hand gestures. A camera detects motion and software tries to recognise the movements. If a hand gesture is recognised it sends a specific command to your television or dvd player.

The developers are still struggling with some issues and say it will probably be sold by 2010. Till then expect some Australian scientists sitting dead quite on the couch while their favourite sports team is winning, to make sure it doesn't switch channels.

Next step: thought control.
