Sony announced playTV, a combination of a TV tuner and a personal video recorder (PVR) for the PlayStation 3. Apart from the fact that it's a great marketing strategy from Sony, it really bundles the separate strengths of the Sony products for multimedia entertainment. The playTV box features two TV tuners (HD ready) and connects to the PS3 which will act as a standard PVR with an electronic program guide and time shifting. It uses the harddrive of the PS3 to record television. So far, that's a nice extra feature for the PlayStation 3. But the PlayStation Portable connectivity is what makes it really interesting. You can watch live TV on your PSP over the wireless network, control the television or schedule recordings. Earlier recorded programs can quickly be saved to the PSP by plugging it in with a USB cable. So you schedule to record the morning news every day, it records while you take a shower and you can watch it on your PSP in the bus. There is little information on how much the playTV box will cost or when it will sell. All Sony tells us is that the service will be available in Spain, Germany, UK, France and Italy in early 2008.
